Renato Soares

Photographer, Brazil

Renato Soares is an indigenous photographer who works and lives in Minas Gerais, Brazil.
The work of indigenist Renato Soares is considered by the Academy of Visual Anthropology to be the “Anthropology of Beauty” due to his commitment to revealing what is beautiful and wise in the customs of indigenous peoples. Over 30 years of perseverance in his expeditions and projects throughout Brazil, trust and passion have been created between the artist and the more than 90 ethnic groups that have been part of his studies and research. The photographer’s gaze allows the viewer to discover the beauty of indigenous lives in full symbiosis with nature.

In addition to projects with an ambitious socio-cultural mission, Soares collaborates with magazines at prestigious universities, as well as contributing to publications such as National Geographic and Scientific American.
With travelling exhibitions on several continents, his work has been shown in galleries and museums such as the Museum of Modern Art in São Paulo, the Amazon Museum (MUSA), the Palais de la Découverte in Paris and the New Gallery in Los Angeles.

Renato’s lens manages to penetrate the intimacy of ritual without being intrusive. He reveals history with the complicity of someone keeping a secret, bringing all its power to the work of art.
